1355475 Steel compositions HITACHI Ltd 23 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 8294/72 HeadingC7A An age-hardenable martensitic steel comprises, in weight percent:- 18 to 26% nickel 0À15 to 0À35% aluminium 1À0 to 2À0% titanium 0À2 to 4À0% molybdenum, tungsten, chromium and / or vanadium optionally up to 1% niobium and up to 0À5% manganese, the balance being iron and impurities including not more than 0À03% carbon, 0À1% silicon, 0À01% each of phosphorus sulphur and nitrogen. The addition of molybdenum, tungsten, chromium and/or vanadium suppresses the formation of Ni 3 (Al, Ti) at the grain boundaries thus conferring greater ductility together with mechanical strength. Alloys containing around 20% nickel may be converted into martensite by cooling to room temperature after solution treatment, but alloys containing more than 23% nickel need to be cooled to at least -73‹C in order to convert the microstructure fully to martensite; alternatively after cooling to room temperature, the alloy is arranged at 600 to 750‹C for 1-20 hours. Age-hardening is preferably accomplished at 400 to 550‹C for 0À5 to 30 hours.
