Abstract
512,524. Alloys; annealing. VEREINIGTE OBERSCHLESISCHE HUTTENWERKE AKT.-GES. March 9, 1938, No. 7385. Convention date, March 11, 1937. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] A nickel-free steel alloy containing 0.05-0.3 per cent. of carbon, 3-12 per cent. of chromium, 5-12 per cent. of manganese, and 1-3 per cent. of molybdenum, with or without 1-5 per cent. of cobalt, is given an austenitic structure by a heat treatment consisting of rapid cooling from 900-1,100‹C. in water, oil, air or other hardening agent. Up to half of the cobalt may be replaced by nickel at the rate of 1.5 per cent. of nickel for each 2 per cent. of cobalt replaced. One or more of the additional elements copper, tantalum, vanadium, titanium, silicon and tungsten each up to 2 per cent. may be added. For producing a separation hardening one or more of the elements zirconium, beryllium, aluminium and boron up to a total of 0.1-2 per cent. may be added, and after the abovementioned heat treatment the alloy may be tempered for 5-20 hours at 300-700‹C. When good workability is desired the alloy after quenching from 900-1,100‹C. as above is annealed at 500-900‹C. for 2-4 hours, then worked, and finally quenched from 900-1,100‹C. again. Specification 373,690 is referred to.
