Abstract

538,886. Refining manganese and manganese alloys. CONSOLIDATED MINING & SMELTING CO., OF CANADA, Ltd. Feb. 19, 1940, No. 3128. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1939. [Class 82 (i)] The sulphur content of manganese alloys, which may contain one or more of the elements nickel, copper, iron, carbon, zinc, vanadium, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, tin, aluminium, beryllium, silver, magnesium, and titanium in various proportions up to 70 per cent., is reduced by treating the molten alloy with an oxygen compound of boron such as boric acid or a salt thereof such as borax. The treatment may be effected at 1300-1600‹C. and may be accompanied by agitation. The treatment of the following alloys is described (a) 50 per cent. of manganese, 30 per cent. of copper, and 20 per cent. of nickel; (b) 48 per cent. of iron, 37 per cent of manganese, and 15 per cent. of chromium; (c) 90 per cent. of manganese and 10 per cent. of copper. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the application of the process to manganese as distinct from manganese alloys, and describes also the removal of boron from manganese and manganese alloys by treatment of the molten metal or alloy with an oxide of manganese. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
