Abstract
521,951. Alloys; crucibles. STRITTMATTER, M. L. A. Nov. 28, 1938, No. 34636. [Class 82 (i)] In a process for making alloy steels by the, exothermic reduction of a mixture of magnetic iron oxide, which may be an ore. alloying metals or their ores such as chromite, and oxidizing agents, the constituents of the charge are preheated to above 392‹F., and preferably above 572‹F., and the reaction is started while the constituents are still at that temperature. The crucible used may be one which widens towards its upper part, the side walls having an inclination of about 20 - 40 degrees to the vertical. Ignition may be effected at two or more spaced points on the surface of the charge. Chromium, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, manganese, and titanium steels are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 486,908.
