Abstract
642,582. Granulating cobalt and nickel. SOC. GENERALE METALLURGIQUE DE HOBOKEN. Dec. 31, 1946, No. 38118. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1944. [Class 82(ii)] In a process for the granulation of cobalt or nickel in which the molten metal falls freely through holes 5 in the bottom of a crucible 2 into water or other cooling liquid in a vessel 7, jerks are imparted to the crucible 2 during the fall as by means of a variable stroke eccentric 3. The metal may be pure or impure, it may be strongly decarburized, and it may be deoxidized and/or degasified by means of magnesium and/or silicon. The crucible may be lined with refractory material 4, and the metal may be heated to about 100‹C above its melting point. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the metal may be pre-carburized, it may be deoxidized and/or degasified by means of aluminium, and the crucible 2 may be made of a substance free from carbon and incapable of freeing gases by its decomposition. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
