Abstract
A duplex metal block or piece, e.g. a bearing, consists of steel and zinc-aluminium alloy rich in zinc alloyed together by surface interaction. The surface of the steel block is coated with zinc by any suitable means, cleaned by scraping, brushing, or light pickling, heated to about 250 DEG C., the molten zinc-aluminium alloy being then applied to the surface and allowed to set thereon. The zinc-coated steel block may be placed in a mould which may have been previously heated to 250 DEG C., and the block and the mould are kept at 250 DEG C. while the zinc-aluminium alloy is allowed to flow over the steel block for some time; the flow is then arrested and the alloy allowed to set in the desired shape. The alloy employed does not contain tin and preferably contains 70-99 per cent of zinc and the remainder mainly aluminium.
