Abstract

A protective coating is formed on iron or steel by first coating with zinc by electrolysis and then immersing in molten aluminium or aluminium alloy for a few minutes. The iron or steel is preferably cleaned, for example by sand-blasting, a coating of zinc of the order of 0,0003 inch to 0,001 inch in thickness is applied electrolytically and the zinc-coated iron or steel is immersed in molten aluminium which is heated to between 660 DEG and 800 DEG C. Excess of aluminium may be allowed to drain off or may be removed by drawing the coated metal rapidly between wire-bristled brushes as it leaves the coating bath. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 11836/12, 154,808, and 252,490, [all in Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.].
