Abstract

Metal is coated by a hot-dipping process with aluminium or one of its alloys in the absence of a flux or a protective atmosphere, by introducing one or both of Na or K into the bath in a minor amount. From 0.001 to 0.10 per cent of Na or K can be maintained in the bath or it may be fully saturated with the metal. The Na or K may be added below the surface as a liquid, a vapour, wrapped in Al foil, or as a master alloy. The metals to which the process is applicable are those forming an interfacial layer when dipped in the bath e.g. ferrous metals, Cr, Co, Mo, Ni, Ta, Ti, W, V, Zr, and their alloys. The following metals can be alloyed with the Al in the coating bath:- Be, Ce, Cr, Cu, Co, Mg, Mo, Si, Ti, V, and Zn. De-greasing, pickling or sand-blasting are preferably used to clean the metal before dipping.
