Abstract
In a process for the deposition, with diffusion, of an element on a metal, the metal to be coated is heated in contact with the coating element and two or more ammonium halides. Metals which may be coated are Fe, steel, Zr, Ni, Co, Mo, W, Ti, Cu, Nb, Ta, Pt and alloys thereof. Elements which may be deposited are Cr, Al, Ni, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, Nb, Ta, V, Ti, Zr, Be, Th, Si and B. The exemplified coating composition comprises Cr, NH4F, NH4Cl and Al2O3. The process may be repeated to deposit two or more coatings, e.g. Mo can be Cr-coated and subsequently Si-coated.
