Abstract
A method of producing a corrosion-resistant surface on a base comprises flame-spraying a mixture of the following components: (a) a metallic component containing at least 1% of one or more of the elements Al, Cr and Si and the balance one or more of the elements Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni; (b) a boron component comprising elemental boron and/or one or more borides and/or intermetallic compounds containing boron; the boron being at least 0.2% by weight of the boron component and within 0.08-10% by weight of the mixture, the metallic component comprising 60-98% and the boron component 40-2% of the mixture. The metallic component may be a molybdenum silicide, or a Mo-Si-Al alloy and the boron component may be ferro-boron, dichromium boride, zirconium diboride, or a nickel base boron alloy. The flame spraying may be performed by the use of two guns, one with the metallic component and one with the boron component, or by the use of a single gun and a rod or wire of the metallic component coated with the boron component or the two compenents mixed in powder form. The wire or rod may be coated by flame-spraying. The base to be coated may be a metal or a ceramic.
