Abstract
1379946 Plasma-sprayed TiC-containing coatings CHROMALLOY AMERICAN CORP 6 Sept 1972 [17 Nov 1971] 41318/72 Heading C7F A metal substrate has plasma-sprayed thereon a coating consisting of 10-80 wt per cent primary grains of TiC dispersed through a steel matrix constituting the balance and being one of the following: (A) 1 to 6% Cr, 0À3 to 6% Mo, 0À3- 0À8% C, balance Fe and incidental impurities (B) 6 to 12% Cr, 0À5 to 5% Mo, 0À6 to 1À2% C, 0 to 5% W, 0 to 2% V, 0 to 3% Ni, 0 to 5% Co, balance Fe or (C) 10-30% Ni, 0À2 to 9% Ti, 0 to 5% Al, the sum Ti + Al not exceeding 9%, 0 to 25% Co, 0 to 10% Mo, balance at least 50% Fe, the proportions being such that when Ni = 10 to 22%, Al + Ti is less than 1À5%, and Mo, Co, are each at least 2%, and when Ni = 18 to 30% and Mo = less than 2%, Al + Ti is more than 1À5%, said matrix from A, B, or C being characterized by the presence of martensite. The substrate has M.pt. > 1100‹F and may be Al, Cu, Ag or alloys based on these, steels, Fe alloys, Ni or Co or their alloys and plasma-spraying, preferably with prealloyed powder, takes place in an inert gas such as 90 vol % N 2 /10% H 2 ; the coating may be subsequently tempered.
