Abstract
575,103. Cleansing compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Dec. 20, 1943, No. 21312. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1942. [Class 91] [Also in Group II] Metals and metal articles other than those of zinc are cleaned by contacting them with a moltencomposition consisting of alkali metal hydroxide and alkali metal cyanide, the latter preferably 40-60 per cent. by weight. In addition, the bath may contain a diluent such as alkali, and alkaline earth metal, halide, borate, and phosphate up to 20-50 per cent. by weight of the bath and also other infusible organic compounds which are substantially non-reactive towards alkali metal hydroxide and cyanide, e.g., an alkali metal carbonate such as sodium carbonate. The preferred temperature of the bath is 300-500C. and after the articles have been removed from the bath, they may be washed with water or quenched in a water bath, the cleaned articles then being ready for other operations such as electroplating, galvanizing or painting. The treatment of nickel, copper, and alloys of copper with zinc, tin and/or nickel is referred to.
