Abstract

Continuous, adherent lead coatings are formed on surfaces of iron, steel, copper or their alloys by dipping the solid metal into liquid lead or lead alloys containing 0.01-0.5 per cent of nickel. Lead alloys containing tellurium or copper or both may be used. Prior to coating, iron or steel may be pickled in hot 10 per cent sulphuric acid, without any inhibitor; or roughened, e.g. by scratch brushing, and then pickled in inhibited acid; copper surfaces may be roughened in acidified solutions of ferric sulphate or ferric chloride. After pickling and washing the metal may be fluxed in aqueous zinc chloride or zinc ammonium chloride, in hydrogen gas or in an aqueous solution of equal parts of lithium, potassium and ammonium chlorides; or molten zinc ammonium chloride may be floated on the lead bath. The coating may serve as a lubricant during drawing or may be built up by melting a lead rod thereon, or articles may be simultaneously coated and soldered. Specification 226,774, [Class 82(i)], is referred to.
