819,352. Electroplating on aluminium with copper. MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE OF HER MAJESTY'S CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. Nov. 11, 1955 [Nov. 12, 1954], No. 32324/55. Class 41. Cleaned aluminium and aluminium base alloys are cathodically plated with copper, using a soluble anode composed at least mainly of copper, from a bath of pH not above 4, the anions of which consistitute a pickling agent for the metal plated upon and the bath containing copper in solution whereby the oxide on the surface of the metal to be plated upon is removed with at most very minor attack on the metal itself. A modifying agent, e.g. a fluoride, may be added to render the coppercontaining pickling solution sufficiently aggressive. Complexing agents, e.g. of the chelate type may be added to control the free copper ion concentration and wetting agents, brighteners, and buffers may also be added. Prior to plating the aluminium or alloy is cleaned by immersion, e.g. in an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate and trisodium phosphate with or without a preliminary solvent degreasing, followed by a water rinse. Typical baths contain copper sulphate or copper nitrate, with or without excess sulphuric or nitric acid, citric acid, and optionally potassium fluoride or ammonium bifluoride.
