Abstract

898,006. Nickel plating baths. CANADA, MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE. Sept. 30, 1958, No. 31230/58. Class 41. A nickel plating bath, especially suitable for plating aluminium, consists of a nickel salt, a a fluoborate or fluosilicate preferably of nickel, and a halide e.g. a metal chloride of concentration 0.01 N or less, the pH of the bath being adjusted to 4 or less e.g. by adding H2SO4, H3BO3, fluoboric or other compatible acid. It is stated that the acid bath has a pickling effect. Optional additions are brighteners, wetting agents and buffers. The plated metal which also includes copper, brass, zinc and stainless steel, may be heated at 500‹ C. for 10 minutes to improve adhesion of the coating. The aluminium should preferably be cleaned by hot solvent, and then a mild alkali bath containing sodium carbonate or phosphate, and then rinsed in water. The metal halide present in small amount e.g. about 1 g. per litre of bath, may be nickel or cobalt chloride, but alkali metal or ammonia chlorides or bromides may be used. Fluorides are excluded.
