Abstract

825,031. Electrodepositing black nickel finish on metals. MOND NICKEL CO. Ltd. Feb. 6, 1958 [Feb. 15, 1957], No. 3957/58. Class 41. A bath for electrodepositing black nickel consists of an aqueous acidic solution containing at least 50 g/l. nickel chloride (calculated as NiCl 2 .6H 2 O), from 7.5 to 45 g/l. ammonium chloride, from 7.5 to 30 g/l. sodium thiocyanate, and from 15 to 60 g/l. zinc chloride. In use the current density is related to the concentration of nickel chloride as shown in the graph, the minimum current density being 0.108 amps/ sq. dm. In practice the nickel chloride concentration does not exceed 165 g/l. of the hexahydrate and the pH is between 2.3 and 5.5 the lower pH values being obtained by addition of hydrochloric or, less desirably, sulphuric acid. Preferably a base of wrought nickel or nickelplated steel is scrubbed with pumice, cathodically cleaned in an alkaline cleaner, and then anodically treated in a chloride nickel electroplating bath, which may contain boric acid and an anti-pitting agent, followed by plating with nickel on reversal of current, whereafter the black nickel finish is deposited using a wrought nickel anode. Other bases referred to are stainless steel, copper alloys, cast iron, and precious metals and their alloys while the undercoat for the black nickel deposit may be copper, silver, cobalt, chromium, lead, cadmium, zinc, tin, antimony, bismuth, gold, cobalt-nickel, tin-bismuth and antimony-bismuth alloys, and brass.
