Abstract

A micro-cracked Cr coating (i.e. one having cracks spaced from one another by 10-50 microns) is produced on an object by electrolytically depositing an intermediate Ni layer in such a manner that during subsequent electro-plating of the Cr the Ni and Cr simultaneously micro-crack. The Ni plating is carried out in an aqueous acid Ni bath at a maximum temperature of 35 DEG C. and a current density between 1 and 15 A/dm2, the bath comprising on the one hand nickel chloride, sulphamate or fluoborate and on the other hand one or more of ammonium acetate and of the following acids and their nickel salts:- acetic, gluconic, tartaric, formic, malic, lactic, citric and succinic acids. Prior to electro-plating with the cracking Ni, the object may be degreased and be plated with Cu, brass or dull, levelling, semi-bright or bright Ni. The cracking Ni electrolyte may contain a brightening agent which is a sulphonate, sulphonamide or sulphonimide of an aromatic compound (e.g. saccharine), butyne 1-4 diol, or an amino derivative of a heterocyclic compound (e.g. 2-amino-thiazole) or a Co salt. During the plating, of the cracking Ni, impurities may be removed from the electrolyte by known methods, e.g. electrolytically. When cracking- Ni is to be plated on bright Ni, the bright Ni may be depassivated electrolytically in a bath containing NaOH, Na2CO3 and NaCN. Conventional Cr plating baths may be used comprising as catalysts the sulphuric, hydrofluoric and fluosilicic ions. The use of Cr baths containing Se and of Ni baths containing particles which are insoluble in the Ni is said to be not incompatible with the use of the cracking deposits specified above.
