Abstract

871,276. Nickel-plating baths. HANSONVAN WINKLE-MUNNING CO. Dec. 7, 1959 [Feb. 26, 1959], No. 41502/59. Class 41. A nickel-plating bath is improved to give corrosion-resistant nickel coatings by adding thereto an organic carboxylic acid of pKa 3 to 5, and a secondary brightening agent. Suitable organic acids include formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, mandelic, chlor-propionic, phenoxyacetic, and diglycollic acid. Secondary brightening agents include alpha-substituted acetylenic compounds, of which a large number of examples are given, including 3-butyne 1,2- diol, 1-methoxy 2-propyne, 3-chloro 3-methyl 4-hexyne, 1.4-di-acetoxy 2-butyne, and alkynol-expoxide reaction products prepared from alpha-hydroxy acetylenic compounds, e.g. 2-butyne 1,4-diol and ethylene oxide. Nickel salts specified are sulphate, chloride, sulphamate, or fluoborate.
