Abstract

864,287. Nickel plating baths. HANSONVAN WINKLE MUNNING CO. July 6, 1959 [July 22, 1958], No. 23140/59. Class 41. Nickel plating baths are improved by adding thereto the water-soluble reaction product of an α-hydroxy acetylenic compound and an epoxide in the presence of an organic or inorganic base as catalyst. As the acetylenic compound, 2-propane-1-01, 2-butine-1: 4-diol, 4-chloro-2- butyne-1-ol may be used. As the epoxide, simple compounds, e.g. ethylene or propylene oxide, or substituted derivatives thereof, e.g. allyl glycidyl ether, epichlorhydrin may be used. The number of C atoms present in substituent groups should be limited to 5 to 7, to render the product water-soluble. Many examples are given of each compound. Preferably there is also added an organic compound containing 0 and S, e.g. sulphonic or sulphinic acids of mono- or poly-nuclear aromatic ring compounds including heterocyclic compounds.
