Abstract

525,364. Electrodeposition of tin alloys. BAIER, S. W., and MACNAUGHTAN, D. J. Feb. 20, 1939, No. 5568. [Class 41] In electrodeposition of alloys of tin, e.g., of over 30 per cent. tin with copper, nickel, cobalt, cadmium, zinc, antimony, or other metals which can be co-deposited with tin in alkaline solutions, separate anodes of tin and the alloying metal are used in separate circuits the tin anode being polarized by a coating of oxide. The oxide may be obtained by use of excessive current density in the alloy plating bath, by gradually lowering the tin anode into the plating solution with the current on, or by pre-treatment electrolytically in weak alkaline solution, by immersion in an oxidizing solution, or by heat treatment. The process being thus conducted so as to inhibit the tendency of the tin to dissolve as divalent salt instead of tetravalent, increases the coherence of the coatings. Alkali tartrates, e.g., as Rochelle salt, are added to the plating bath to improve the appearance of the alloy deposit. In an example a plating solution contains stannate, cuprocyanide, hydroxide, and cyanide of sodium, and Rochelle salts, anode current densities being up to 20 amps. per sq. feet and cathode up to 30 amps. per sq. feet.
