Abstract

381,932. Electrodeposition of palladium. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd., Thames House, Millbank, and RAPER, A. R., of Mond Nickel Co., Bashley Road, both in London. July 11, 1931, No. 20008. [Class 41.] A palladium anode is employed in an electrolyte capable of dissolving the anode at substantially the rate of deposition. The electrolyte may consist of a solution of a palladonitrite of one or more alkali or alkaline earth metals together with a chloride or bromide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or a mixture of these halides. The concentration of palladium is preferably 10 gms. per litre and that of the halide 10-30 gms. per litre. Detailed instructions are given for preparing baths from sodium and potassium palladonitrites and also direct from palladium. The anodes may consist of pure hard rolled palladium sheet or mav be cast. Thev may be enclosed in unbleached calico bags. The baths are preferably operated at 40-50‹ C. Silver, gold, copper, brass, bronze, palladium and nickelsilver articles may be plated directly ; nickel, iron and steel are given a preliminary coating of copper or silver or both from a cyanide bath. When plating copper and other base metal articles from a bath containing a bromide, room temperature should not be exceeded ; higher temperatures may, however, be employed if a preliminary strike of palladium is deposited from an ammoniacal solution.
