Abstract

A protective coating is formed on aluminium, magnesium, or their alloys by immersion in a bath comprising an alkaline solution of a salt containing a metal in the acid radical other than chromium capable of forming at least two oxides, e.g. an alkaline solution of a vanadate, molybdate, tungstate, titanate, uranate, niobate or manganate or a mixture of two or more of these salts. An article of aluminium may be immersed in a boiling solution containing about 0,5 per cent of sodium or potassium molybdate and about 1 per cent of sodium carbonate or the article may constitute the anode in an electrolytic bath of the above composition and a current passed through, the amplitude of the current being dependent on the temperature of the bath and the thickness of coating desired.
