Abstract
297,780. Klein, P., Szegvari, A., McKay, R. F., Hayes, C., and Trobridge, G. W. March 26, 1927. Latex, treating.-In the electrophoretic deposition of rubber from dispersions having a content of hydroxyl ions in insufficient quantity to produce gas formation on the anode as described in Specification 257,885, the conductivity of the dispension is altered by the addition of electrolytes free from hydroxyl ions, or by removing electrolytes from the dispersion and replacing them by electrolytes free from hydroxyl ions. Under these circumstances, the hydroxyl ion concentration may be increased by addition above the previous limits without gas formation. These additions are made to influence the character of the deposit, which otherwise may crack or slip off the moulds or exhibit a cheese-like structure. or may be too hard or too soft, after drying. Electrolytes whose anions form water-soluble compounds with the anode, such as alkali chlorides with zinc anodes prevent sticking of the rubber to the anode, and produce softer deposits. An electrolyte having polyvalent cations, for example calcium chloride, increases coagulation, and polyvalent anions such as alkali ferrocyanide or phosphates increase the toughness of the deposits. Examples of suitable conductivity and alkalinity are given in the Specification. Specification 246,532 also is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the treatment of the moulds, or of the deposits after formation but before drying for the same purpose.
