Abstract

300,719. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges,). Aug. 27, 1927. Latex, coagulating.-Rubber is coagulated from latex by proteases in the presence of additional substances facilitating the reaction or improving the properties of the rubber, such as hydrocyanic acid, hydrogen sulphide or saline mixtures possessing buffer properties. Suitable proteases are those contained in succus caricae papayae. The properties of the rubber can be improved in a controllable manner by imparting to the latex such a hydrogen-ion concentration that the coagulation is accelerated or retarded thereby. In an example, air is passed through latex stabilized with ammonia until a hydrogen-ion concentration of pH = 8 is attained : 100 c.c. of a 2 per cent solution of succus caricae papayae are added to 5 litres of the latex: after 20 hours a dense coagulated product separates out. If hydrocyanic acid is added the time of coagulation is reduced to 7 hours. With a higher ion concentration the time of coagulation is shorter.
