Abstract

The oxidation of india-rubber &c. is retarded by combining with unvulcanized rubber an aldehydeamine reaction-product which retards oxidation during and after vulcanization. Certain condensation-products of acetaldehyde and aniline possess the necessary properties. The product obtained by condensing 1 1/2 molecules of acetaldehyde with 1 molecule of aniline in an acid solution in which the hydrogen ion concentration exceeds 1 x 10-3 retards oxidation without affecting the rate of vulcanization. The condensate of acetaldehyde and aniline in aqueous solution having a hydrogen ion concentration between 1 x 10-3 and 1 x 10-9 retards oxidation and also accelerates vulcanization.
