Abstract

290,313. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., Twiss, D. F., and Murphy, E. A. Nov. 13, 1926. Latex, treating.-During the concentration by evaporation of latex to which compounding ingredients and stabilizing agents have previously been added, a gentle continuous mixing action is maintained. The stabilizing agents may include colloids such as glue, gelatine, casein, vegetable gums, dextrin or soap, an alkali capable of acting with the natural acids of the, latex, or saline substances such as sodium silicate or viscose which impart an alkaline reaction. Preferably there is employed a non-volatile alkali or an alkalimetal derivative of a colloid in proportion just sufficient to facilitate concentration without immediate coagulation. When an alkali-colloid is employed it may be prepared from an acid of high molecular weight or from a protein substance and may be added to the latex as such or substances may be added to the latex so that the alkali-colloid is formed by chemical action therein. In an example, 8 parts zinc oxide, 2.5 sulphur, 1 lamp black, 20 talc, 15 whiting, 2 emulsified paraffin wax, 1 finely-ground mineral rubber, are mixed with 100 parts of water containing 0.1 part caustic potash, 0.3 oleac acid and 0.3 casein. Ammomia-preserved latex is then added in the proportion of 60 parts rubber and the whole mixed and concentrated at 70‹ C. After concentration, ammonia and an accelerator such as 0.3 part diethylammonium diethyldithiocarbonate are added during cooling, the mixing action being continued until both are uniformly distributed. Other examples are given in one of which sulphur and piperidine piperidine-carbo. thianolate are added during the latter part of the concentration. The addition of aqueous ammonia to the cencentrates prevents thickening to a stiff paste. Mixtures of two or more aqueous dispersions of rubber, gutta-percha, balata and similar resins may be concentrated according to the invention.
