Abstract
In a process for producing phosphate coatings on ferrous, zinc and other metallic surfaces in which the surfaces are treated with a solution of a primary orthophosphate which dissociates in aqueous solution to form an equilibrium mixture of phosphoric acid with primary, and more basic, phosphates, the solution is heated immediately before and during the coating treatment to produce a condition of supersaturation and treatment of metallic surfaces is interrupted from time to time while the solution is regenerated to maintain a condition of supersaturation by cooling the whole solution or a portion withdrawn from the solution and treating it to increase its content of phosphates more basic than the primary salt and reheating it prior to continuing the treatment. The coating may be effected by immersion or spraying and accelerators may be used. The solution, or the portion withdrawn from the solution, may be subjected to oxidation to remove oxidizable by-products of the process.
