Abstract

The invention comprises mixed polybasic acid salts of choline and calcium or magnesium. They are made by treating salts of choline and polybasic acids still containing hydrogen atoms which are replaceable by metal with calcium or magnesium oxides or hydroxides, water-soluble calcium or magnesium salts, or difficultly water-soluble or water-insoluble salts of calcium or magnesium with acids which are weaker than the acid contained in the acid choline salt and thereby converting them into the corresponding calcium- or magnesium-choline mixed salts. The acid choline salts may be converted into their sodium salts before treatment with calcium or magnesium compounds. The products are non-hygroscopic. Choline salts specified are the mono- or di-citrates and phosphates, mono-tartrate and maleinate and acid salts of butane tetracarboxylic acid. Calcium and magnesium compounds specified are the oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, bicarbonates and chlorides. Reactions may be effected in water or lower alcohols, the choline salt and calcium or magnesium compound being taken in equimolar quantities. The products may be precipitated from solution by the addition of organic solvents. In an example mono-choline citrate is treated in water with calcium hydroxide, the mixed salt being obtained on evaporation of the solution.
