Abstract
An aqueous solution for producing phosphate coatings on metal surfaces (particularly iron and steel) contains one or more coating metal phosphates, one or more "dehydrated" phosphates and a peroxide accelerator. "Dehydrated" phosphates are defined as those salts of phosphorus-containing acids which have a lower water content than those derived from H3PO4 and in which there is no direct P-P linkage. The solution preferably contains 1-15 g./l. coating metal (e.g. zinc), at least 0.01 g./l. dehydrated phosphate (e.g. alkali metal or ammonium pyro-, hexameta-, tripoly- and tetrapoly-phosphates), and peroxide (calculated as H2O2) in a concentration of 1/30 th- 1/8 th of the concentration of coating metal. The peroxide may be introduced into the solution as hydrogen peroxide, or hydrogen peroxide may be generated in the solution by introducing percompounds (such as perphosphates, perborates and ammonium persulphate) together with an amount of acid to maintain constancy of pH value. The solution is preferably supersaturated in respect of coating metal phosphate and possesses a pH value (stabilized by buffers such as sodium and/or zinc acetate) which exceeds that of equilibrium. The phosphate coatings may be treated in chromic acid solution.
