Abstract

A pickling inhibitor consists, by weight, of 1 part of dibutylthiourea and 1-5 parts of the quaternary ammonium compound represented by the formula R4NX, where X is a halogen atom and R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1-22 carbon atoms, one or two of said radicals containing 8-22 carbon atoms. The short-chain radical may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or pentyl, and the longchain radical may be octyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, octadecenyl, octadecadienyl, octadecatrienyl, docosyl or eicosyl. Specific quaternary compounds referred to are tallow- and coco-trimethylammonium chlorides, dicoco- and ditallow-dimethylammonium chlorides, and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride.
