Abstract
Before annealing titanium or titanium-base alloys at a temperature not exceeding 800 DEG C., a composition comprising an alkali metal nitrate is applied to the surface thereof, the effect of said composition being to make easier the subsequent removal of scale in a pickling solution such as one comprising nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. The nitrate should have a melting point below the annealing temperature and is preferably sodium nitrate. To reduce its fluidity, the nitrate may be admixed with a diluent such as one or more alkali metal carbonates, e.g. sodium carbonate; a suitable composition is, by weight, nitrate 10-100 per cent, diluent 90-0 per cent. The composition may be applied (a) as a powder by sprinkling on a titanium surface which has been previously cleaned and wetted by a detergent solution, or (b) as a boiling, saturated solution. Annealing is generally performed at 650 DEG -750 DEG C. for 3 hours to 1/2 -hour.
