Abstract

An aqueous phosphatizing solution contains a coating metal phosphate and a water-soluble salt of a phosphorus-containing acid in which there is a direct linkage between two phosphorus atoms and in which the polar number of at least one of these phosphorus atoms is less than 5. Suitable coating metal phosphates are zinc and manganese phosphates. The water-soluble salt may be a salt of hypophosphoric acid or diphosphorus acid formed, for example, with an alkali metal, ammonium, magnesium, triethanolamine or cyclohexylamine: two other suitable salts are Na5P3O9 and Na4HP3O8. The solution may also contain nitrates, nitrites and chlorates, and may be applied to the surfaces to be coated (primarily iron and steel) by immersion or spraying.
