Abstract

A process for producing a corrosion-resistant surface on metals-particularly iron, steel, zinc, cadmium, aluminium and its alloys-comprises applying to the metal surface a phosphatisation solution having dissolved therein a minor proportion, i.e., an amount up to their maximum solubility in the bath and normally not exceeding 1 per cent., of one or more hydrated complex ammonium phosphates of a bivalent metal in which at least 50 per cent. of the metal is in the anion. The structural formula of such complex phosphates is stated to be <FORM:0599728/III/1> where M is one of the metals cobalt, nickel or copper, and they are conveniently added to the phosphating bath whilst in solution in phosphoric acid. An improvement is stated to be obtained by heating the complex phosphate until the evolution of ammonia virtually ceases before adding it to the phosphating solution, and mixtures of such heated complex phosphates with the non-heated type may be used. The phosphating baths described in Specifications 419,487 and 447,176, [both in Group II], are said to be particularly suitable for receiving such complex phosphates, and a method of preparing the complex phosphate of copper is described.ALSO:A process for producing a corrosion-resistant surface on metals-particularly iron, steel, zinc, cadmium, aluminium and its alloys-comprises applying to the metal surface a phosphatisation solution having dissolved therein a minor proportion, i.e. an amount up to their maximum solubility in the bath and normally not exceeding 1 per cent of one or more hydrated complex ammonium phosphates of a bivalent metal in which at least 50 per cent of the metal is in the anion. The structural formula of such complex phosphates is stated to be (NH4)4+[M.(H2O)4]++ [PO4.M.PO4.M.PO4.M.PO4]...... where M is one of the metals cobalt, nickel or copper and they are conveniently added to the phosphating bath whilst in solution in phosphoric acid.
