Abstract
1,193,459. Modifying metallic surfaces. GERHARD COLLARDIN G.m.b.H. Dec. 6, 1967 [Dec. 7, 1966], No. 55390/67. Heading C7U. Zinc or galvanized steel surfaces are coated by treating with a solution which is free from chromic acid, phosphoric acid and oxalic acid and which consists of at least one complex flouride of Fe, Zr, Ti, and Si, at least one oxidising agent and has a pH of 0À8 to 3À5. The metal ions are added to the solution in the form of their soluble salts while in the case of Ti, Zr and Si they may be added as the corresponding flouride complex. The fluoride ions are added as HF or its salts. Suitable solutions contain 0À1 to 10 g. fl. ferric ions, 0À2 to 40 g/l flouride ions and oxidising agents in amounts corresponding to 0À3 to 50 g/l nitrate ions. The oxidizing agents are: nitrate, nitrite, chlorate, bromate, hydrogen peroxide, aliphatic and anomatic nitro and nitreous compounds e.g. nitroguanidine, picric acid, nitrophenols mono and di-nitrobenzenesulphonic acid. The solution at 5‹ -95‹ C. is applied to the metal by dipping, burshing, spraying or roller. The coated surface may be passivated with solutions containing 0À01 to 5 g/l of chromic and/or phosphoric acid.
