Abstract

1319766 Phosphatising IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES 7 Oct 1970 [23 Oct 1969] 51925/69 Headings C7U In phosphatisation of a metallic substrate by contact with an acidic zinc phosphate solution containing chlorate, there is maintained in the solution, as coating proceeds, a nitrite concentration of at least 0À003 wt% and a nitrate concentration of at least 0À5 wt% (calculated as NO 2 and NO 3 respectively) by addition of nitrite and nitrate. Preferred amounts of chlorate, nitrite and nitrate are 0À01 - 1% (as CIO 3 ), 0À003 - 0À05% and 0À5 - 2% respectively; nitrate may be added as NaNO 3 , NH 4 NO 3 , or Zn (NO 3 ) 2 and nitrite as NaNO 2 or NH 4 NO 2 . The solution may contain Ni ions when used on galvanized steel; it is applied to ferrous metal. such as steel by dipping, or preferably, spraying, at 100 - 130‹C.
