Abstract

1383285 Phosphate coating iron and steel PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES Ltd 13 Aug 1973 [16 Aug 1972] 38230/73 Heading C7U In the phosphating of iron and steel by immersion in an acid nitrate-accelerated zinc phosphate solution at 80-98‹C, the bath solution is replennished with an aqueous acid concentrate in which the wt. ratio NO 3 : P 2 O 5 is 0.6-1.5, the wt. ratio free P 2 O 5 : total P 2 O 5 is 0.45-0.75 and the total wt. concentration P 2 O 5 + Zn + NO 3 is more than 47%, and the total acid point number is maintained at 20-100 and the free P 2 O 5 : total P 2 O 5 ratio at 0.35-0.6 in the phosphating bath. The initial concentrate for the bath may comprise, by weight; NO 3 : P 2 O 5 = 0.5-2.0, free P 2 O 5 : total P 2 O 5 = 0.4-0.75 and P 2 O 5 + Zn + NO 3 > 47%. The zinc may be added as the metal, ZnO, ZnCO 3 , Zn(NO 3 ) 2 or Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ; the P 2 O 5 may be derived from H 3 PO 4 or Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and the NO 3 may be added as HNO 3 or Zn(NO 3 ) 2 . Other additives are Fe<SP>2+</SP>, urea, Cu, Ni, Na, NH 4 , Ca, F, SO 4 and Cl. The steel may be alkali cleaned, acid pickled and rinsed before phosphating.
