Abstract

The coatings are obtd. by immersion or flooding with an aq. acid soln. contng. zinc, phosphate and nitrate, at 60-90 degrees C., forming nitrite autocatalytically. The NO2 content is kept at min. 0.03 g./l. but is prevented from exceeding 0.2 g./l. by adding substances which decompose the nitrites. The pref. bath contains min. 6 g./l. Zn; min. 5 g./l P2O5; min. 10 g./l. NO3; and 0.03-0.2 g./l. NO2; with acid number 20-80, and wt. ratio P2O5:Zn:NO3 of 1:(0.8-4):(1.8-6); and wt. ratio free P2O5:total P2O5 0.2-0.6:1. The bath may also contain min. 0.4 g./l. Ca. Nitrite contents above 0.2 g./l. tend to produce very thin phosphate coatings which are unsuitable for substrates which will be subjected to cold working or where the coating is required for corrosion protection. The invention solves this problem.
