Abstract

1,185,019. Passivating metal surfaces. ELECTRO CHEMICAL ENG. CO. Ltd. Feb.21, 1968 [Dec. 7, 19661, No. 54743/66. Heading C7U. Zn, Cd or Sn surfaces are passivated by treating in a solution containing hexavalent Cr, nitrate ions, an inorganic acid sulphate ions and a salt of Ti and/or Zr. The surface may be a coating of Zn, Cd or Sn on iron or steel e.g. electro-deposited Zn. The solution may also contain boric acid, sodium nitrate fluoride, zinc ions as the chloride or nitrate. Nitric acid is the preferred acid and the Ti and Zr may be added as the fluozirconate, fluoride, sulphate, nitrate or oxalate, the tetravalent salt being preferred. The preferred concentrations in gms/ litre are:- Cr<SP>+6</SP> 0À175 to 5 as CrO 3 0À280 to 8À1 as Na 2 CrO 4 F- 0À475 to 13À7 as Na F SO 4 <SP>-</SP> 0À075 to 2À16 as (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 Acid 3À55 to 42À6 as HNO 3 70% solution. Zn salt # 0À2 to 10 as Zn (NO 3 ) 2 6H 2 O # 0À044 to 2À2 as Zn<SP>2+</SP> Zr salt # 0À1 to 6À2 as K Zr fluoride # 0À032 to 2 as Zr<SP>4</SP> <SP>+</SP> Ti salt # 0À1 to 5 as KTi fluoride # 0À02 to 1 as Ti<SP>4+</SP>
