Abstract

Metals, particularly iron and steel, are cleaned by means of an alkaline cleaning solution containing a nitrite and then, with or without rinsing with water, subjected to phosphate coating, e.g. with zinc phosphate. The nitrite is preferably an alkali metal, e.g. sodium, nitrite and may be present in a proportion of 1-20 gm./litre. A cleaning solution given by way of example contains disodium and trisodium phosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, a wetting agent and sodium nitrite.
