Abstract

A ferrous metal is degreased and phosphated using two baths the first containing (parts by weight) 1000 of water, 5-15 of a non-ionic surface active agent, e.g. an octylphenol, 0.1-5 of 75% orthophosphoric acid, and 1-5 of acid sodium pyrophosphate, and the second bath containing 1000 of water, 0.1-5 of non-ionic surface active agent, 0.1-5 of 75% orthophosphoric acid, and 0.1-1 of acid sodium pyrophosphate, the pH being between 3 and 6, the temperature between 60 DEG C. and 85 DEG C., and the time of immersion in each bath being between 20 seconds and 2 minutes. The baths may also contain e.g. 0.5 of dicalcium phosphate. The baths may be stirred by vibration or injection of steam.
