Abstract
1,052,771. Pickling and modifying metallic surfaces. PYRENE CO. Ltd. March 2, 1964 [ March 5, 1963], No. 8769/64. Headings C7U and C7E. A ferrous metal surface is treated with a phosphoric acid pickling solution containing arsenic, preferably trivalent e. g. As 2 O 3 or an alkali metal arsenite, prior to phosphate coating with an acid solution of a coating phosphate e. g. Mn, Fc or preferably Zn. Emulsifying and wetting agents and inhibitors e. g. thiourea or its derivatives, amines, gelatine or alkyne compounds such as an alcohol of the acetylene series, may be added to the pickling solution which contains 10 - 300 mg/1 preferably less than 150 mg/1 arsenic and 2À5 - 25% preferably 4 - 15% by weight phosphoric acid. The ferrous metal surface may be treated with the pickling solution by spraying or immersion and then rinsed with cold water and an activating solution containing a titanium salt.
