Abstract

Solid particulate mixtures, for use in aqueous solution as a metal cleanser especially for stainless steel and copper, comprise by weight 40% to 94% of an alkali metal hydroxide; 0.1% to 40% of 2- mercapto-benzothiazole (or an alkali metal salt thereof) and either 1% to 10% of gluconic or heptagluconic acid (or an alkali metal salt thereof) or 5% to 20% of an alkali metal phosphate detergent. Preferred mixtures contain both the above optional constituents and may also contain up to 5% by weight of an anionic or non-ionic surface active agent e.g. polyethylene oxide condensates; nonyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensates and alkyl-napthylene sulphonates and up to 20% by weight of an alkali metal silicate e.g. sodium metasilicate. Specified phosphates used include the tetra alkali-metal pyrophosphates and trialkali-metal polyphosphates. In a preferred embodient, liquid mixtures of the above compositions contain 49.45% to 69.45% by weight of water.
