[Also in Division C5] A composition for inhibiting corrosion of a copper article comprises benzotriazole or a substituted benzotriazole and citric acid or a salt thereof. Corrosion of a copper article in contact with an aqueous solution is inhibited by maintaining in the solution 3 to 30 p. p. m. of benzotriazole, and 30 to 240 p.p.m. of citric acid. The composition may also include a detergent-active compound, which makes it suitable as the base of a dishwashing composition, which may also comprise an oxidizing agent, e.g. chlorinated sodium orthophosphate, chlorinated isocyanurate, or an alkali metal perborate, and an inorganic salt such as an alkali metal carbonate, silicate or sulphate, as well as detergency builders, foam controllers, preservatives, and perfumes. In an Example, cupro-nickel spoons are cleaned using a composition containing Na tripolyphosphate, Na metasilicate, chlorinated trisodium orthophosphate, Na aluminate, Na citrate, benzotriazole, and two commercial detergents.
