Abstract

1313436 Cleaning composition LUBRIZOL CORP 21 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 34223/71 Heading C7E A concentrate, dilutable in water to give a metal-cleaning composition comprises watersoluble alkali metal silicate and alkali metal chloride, the weight ratio silicate: chloride being at least 4:1. The silicate may be Na 2 Si 2 O 5 , Na 2 SiO 3 (or its hydrates) Na 4 SiO 4 or waterglass; the chloride may be NaCl. The concentrate may contain (a) a surfactant (b) a chelating agent (c) a filler and (d) a pH controller. Surfactants (a) are non-ionic or amphoteric, preferably polyethoxylated phenols, alkyl phenols and alcohols, (b) may be an aminopolycarboxylic acid or salt, e.g. EDTA, trimethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid or nitrilotriacetic acid; (c) and (d) may be alkaline materials such as Na 2 CO 3 . There may also be present an activator of the colloidal Ti phospate type. A preferred concentrate contains 65-80 weight parts Na 2 SiO 3 , 5-15 NaCl, 5-15 Na 2 SiO 3 , and optionally 0-10 EDTA, 4-10 surfactant and 4-10 colloidal Ti phospate. 5-20g of concentrate are dissolved per litre of water and contacted with the metal, e. g. steel, by spraying or dipping at 50-100‹C. for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
