Abstract

A liquid abrasive cleanser comprises by weight (a) 30-65%, preferably 45-60%, of a water-insoluble abrasive of particle size such that substantially all passes a 200 mesh (U.S.S.) sieve, (b) 0.5-10% of a water-soluble ionic detergent salt, preferably 2-4% of an anionic salt, (c) 0.5-10%, preferably 3-7% of the condensate of a fatty acid alkanol-amide with 2-5 molar proportions of an alkylene oxide, and (d) 20-60%, preferably 25-45%, of water, the proportions of (a)-(d) being such that the composition is pourable at room temperature and has an apparent viscosity of 7000-30,000 c.p.s., preferably 7000-25,000 c.p.s. (a) may be alumina, corundum, volcanic ash, diatomaceous earth, bentonite, feldspar, or pumice, but most suitably is silica. (b) may be a potassium soap, an alkyl sulphate, a fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate, or a dialkyldimethylammonium chloride, but most preferably is an alkali metal, e.g. sodium, or triethanolamine C10- 16-alkylbene sulphonate. (c) is most suitably derived by condensing a C2- 3-alkylene oxide with a condensate obtained from a C10- 18-fatty acid and an alkanolamine, preferably a monoalkanolamine, having 2 or 3 carbon atoms in each alkanol group; the preferred product is the condensate from coconut fatty acid monoethanolamide and 2-3 molar proportions of ethylene oxide. The composition may also include non-ionic or ampholytic detergents; sodium and potassium phosphates and polyphosphates, borax, sodium carbonate and sesquicarbonate, and sodium silicate (Na2O : SiO2 of 1 : 2.35); kerosene; perfume and essential oils; bactericides such as hexachlorophene; lanolin; polyvinyl pyrrolidone; clays such as bentonite and attapulgite; fluorescent dye and pigment; silicones; phosphate esters such as sodium lauryl orthophosphate; melamine and N-chlorinated melamine; betaine and cysteine; and opacifiers. The composition is preferably dispensed from an aerosol container, nitrogen gas or a mixture of trichloromonofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane being used as propellant.
