[Class 91] Non-transparent soaps and non-soapy detergents of improved whiteness contain a small proportion of a blue-fluorescent substance. The latter specified comprise hydroxy coumarins or hydroxy substituted coumarins such as umbelliferone and #-methyl-umbelliferone, 1- naphthylamine-4-sulphonic acid, and sodium 2 - naphthylamine - 6 : 8 - disulphonate. The substance is added to the soap &c. as a suspension or solution in water with or without an added alkaline compound such as borax, sodium carbonate, or an alkaline phosphate. In the case of soap powders, the addition is made prior to spraying or the atomized suspension is sprayed on to the falling soap particles. The blue-fluorescent substance may be used in combination with a blueing agent such as indigo or a blue alizarin dyestuff. Opacifying substances may be present in the soaps &c. such as titanium oxide or zine oxide. The soaps may be in the usual forms, tablets, fiakes, granules, &c., or they may be filled soaps, usually powder, containing adjuncts such as sodium carbonate, silicate, or phosphates. The non-soapy detergents exemplified comprise higher alkyl sulphonates or sulphates, fatty acid esters of hydroxy ethane sulphonic acid, and derivatives of sulphocarboxylic acid esters of alcohol amine.
