Abstract

A liquid abrasive cleanser comprises (a) a water-insoluble abrasive of particle size such that substantially all passes a 200 mesh (U.S.S.) sieve, (b) a water-soluble ionic detergent salt, (c) an alkanolamide of an alkanolamine containing 2-4 carbon atoms in the alkanol group and a C10-18- fatty acid, (d) a water-soluble alkali metal halide, and (e) water, the amount of (b) and (c) together being less than the amounts of (a) and (e) together, and the amounts of (a), (b), (c) and (e) being such that the composition has an apparent viscosity of 7,000-30,000 cps., preferably 7,000-25,000 cps., and is pourable at room temperature, the amount of (d) present being small but sufficient to stabilize the viscosity of the composition. (a), which usually comprises 30-65%, preferably 45-60%, by weight of the composition may be alumina, corundum, volcanic ash, diatomaceous earth, bentonite, feldspar, or pumice, but more suitably is silica. (b) usually comprises 0,5-10%, more particularly 0,5-4%, of the composition may be a potassium soap, a sodium alkyl sulphate, a sodium fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate or a dialkyldimethylammonium chloride, but most preferably is a C10-16-alkylbenzene sulphonate in the form of the sodium or triethanolamine salt. (c) generally comprises 0,5-10%, preferably 2-10%, of the composition and is derived from C10-18 fatty acids and C2-4-alkanolamines, coconut fatty acid diethanolamide being especially favoured. (d) is preferably sodium chloride and constitutes 0,25-2,5%, preferably 1-2%, of the composition, of which water (e) generally comprises 20-60%. The composition may also include non-ionic or ampholytic detergents; sodium and potassium phosphates and polyphosphates, borax, sodium carbonate and sesquicarbonate, and sodium silicate (Na2O:SiO2 of 1:2,35); copper phthalocyanine mixed with dextrin and the sodium salt of the sulphonated condensate of naphthalene condensed with formaldehyde; kerosene, mineral spirits; fine oil, perfume and essential oils; bactericides such as hexachlorophene; lanolin; polyvinyl pyrrolidone; clays such as bentonite and attapulgite; silicones; fluorescent dye; organic phosphate esters, e.g. sodium lauryl orthophosphate; melamine and N-chlorinated melamine; betaine and cysteine; and pearling agents. The composition is preferably dispensed from an aerosol container, nitrogen gas, or a mixture of trichloromonofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane being used as propellant.
