Abstract

A composition for use in solution as a degreasing agent for metals, especially aluminium, comprises (a) an alkali metal pyrophosphate, preferably sodium pyrophosphate, (b) an alkali metal tripolyphosphate, preferably the sodium salt, (c) disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate, (d) tri-alkaline earth metal phosphate, preferably tricalcium phosphate, (e) an ammonium salt of a mineral acid, preferably ammonium chloride, (f) sodium lauryl sulphate, and (g) an alkali metal carbonate, preferably sodium carbonate, the amount of (g) used being such that the solution has an alkaline reaction. A suitable composition consists of (a) 17.5 parts, (b) 12.5 parts, (c) 12.5 parts, (d) 12.5 parts, (e) 15 parts, (f) 15 parts and (g) 15 parts, all parts being by weight. A satisfactory degreasing bath consists of 15 kg. of such a mixture in 350 l. water at 80 DEG C. Starch may also be included.
