Abstract

1,230,582. Detergent compositions containing benzotriazole derivatives. GEIGY (U.K.) Ltd. 9 June, 1969 [26 June, 1968], No. 30370/68. Addition to 1,065,995. Heading C5D. A detergent composition comprises a watersoluble alkali metal condensed phosphate which acts as a sequestering agent for Ca<SP>++</SP> and, as a tarnish or corrosion inhibitor, a substituted benzotriazole having the Formula (I) wherein R is a straight- or branched-chain alkyl group (C 2-20 ). Condensed phosphates specified are sodium metaphosphate, disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, pentasodium triphosphate and the corresponding potassium salts and the mixed salts hexasodium tetraphosphate and hexasodium hexametaphosphate. Preferred corrosion inhibitors are 5-n-butyl or 5-t-butyl benzotriazole. The composition may also contain a surface-active agent, preferably an anionic surface-active agent, e.g. salts of alkyl (including sec-alkyl) sulphates and alkyl benzene sulphonates. The proportion of the substituted benzotriazole is preferably within the range of 0À01-5À0% by weight whilst the proportion of surface-active agent is within the range of from 10-30% by weight both based on the total weight of the composition. The composition may be used in an aqueous medium.
