Abstract

A heavy duty aqueous liquid detergent composition which is homogeneous at normal temperatures comprises by weight (a) 3-15% of a zwitterionic compound of formula <FORM:0995353/C4-C5/1> where R1 is C10- 18 - alkyl, R2 and where R1 is C10- 18 -alkyl, R2 and R3\t are C1- 3 -alkyl, R4 is C1- 4 -alkylene or -hydroxyalkylene and X- is SO-3 or COO-; (b) 3-12% of a water-soluble anionic sulphate or sulphonate containing a C8- 18-alkyl group; (c) 8-30% of an alkaline earth metal ion sequestrant which is an alkali metal polyphosphate, phytate or aminopolycarboxylate; and (d) 5-15%, preferably 8-12%, of an alkali metal aryl sulphonate. The composition suitably also contains 3.5-6% of sodium or potassium silicate where SiO2: M2O is 1-2.6. (a) is preferably 1 - (alkyldimethylammonio) acetate, 1 - (alkyldimethylammonio) propane - 3 - sulphonate and 1 - (alkyldimethylammonio) 2-hydroxypropane - 3 - sulphonate wherein the alkyl group contains 12-16 carbon atoms. (b) may be an alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate or a fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate or sulphonate, but is preferably a sodium, potassium, ammonium or substituted ammonium alkyl sulphate, alkyl polyglycol ether sulphate or alkylbenzene sulphonate wherein the alkyl group contains 8-18 carbon atoms. It is preferred that (a) and (b) be present in approximately equal amounts. (c) is suitably potassium pyrophosphate, sodium phytate, or sodium or potassium ethylenediamine tetraacetate or nitrilotriacetate, and the sum of (c) and (b) present generally amounts to 25-40%, of which (c) constitutes about two-thirds. (d) is normally sodium or potassium benzene, toluene or xylene sulphonate. Tarnish inhibitor, e.g. ethylene thiourea or benzotriazole, ethanol, perfume, colour antiredeposition agents, thickeners and opacifiers may also be incorporated.
